One of my Cosby Gouramies just died this afternoon :-( and I don't know why, the water stats are fine, all of the other fish are perfectly healthy (eating/swimming vigourosly) and I had even done a partial water change last night.

I found her swimming a little bit desoriented and when I started feeding them she would remain on the same spot swimming with its "face" up doing like circles instead of swimming horizontally or towards the food  later she would go to the bottom of the tank or on top of some plants (balancing on top of them) and even swim upside-down or go back to swim in circles ... she died like 20 mins later. There was no aggresion from the other tankmates or anythig like that.

I bought her like a month ago, quarantined her for 3 weeks along with the other Cosby Gourami and they both seemed ok so I put them in the 75Gal tank like a week ago.

Any ideas on why she could have died???

I dont have the slightest clue as too what a "Cosby" gourami is lol!

Sounds like he/she had a swimming disorder before they passed away. This can be caused by infection of the swim bladder. Too much decomposing organic matter in the water or poor water quality may contribute.

Although, because you have stated you did a water change, this is unlikely.

Whats more likely is, there has been something un-traceble in the fresh water you placed in the tank last night.

It might pay too check the water params from the tap, before you do a water change. Also make sure you have a dechlorinator that destroys chlorine and chloramine, because local authorities have started using this harmful chemical to treat our water.

Do you test the temperature of the new water before placing it in a tank? This can stress a fish and lead to swim bladder problems also!

Sorry bout your loss! :byebye:

thats the problem:

- I did water changes every 3 days because I added these 2 new fish (thats 2 water changes this week)
- I do use dechlorinator with Anti-stress
- I do check the temp before adding it to the tank
- my water tests are OK

this is why I have no clue as of why she died

maybe it was swim-bladder-dissorder for what I've been reading, but she didn't showed any signs before todays afternoon so I don't really know 'cause I thought fish with this dissorder don't die all of a sudden... I should probably let it rest and think it was one of those unexplainable deaths

BTW... a Cosby gourami is just a color morph of the Three-Spot Gourami :)

EDIT: wrong word used

Okay...here goes.

The Cosby or Opaline Gourami is a hybrid variation of the Three-Spot Gourami (Which is actually the same species, Trichogaster trichopterus) that has no spots. So basically a spot-less Three-spot, but still the same species, just a morph. :)

And I'm very sorry for your loss, Shuhu. :rip:

Cheers for that Annastasia! I get it now! :p These common names confuse me no end...

ehhhh... mr_miagi32, I just told you what a Cosby Gourami is at my second post  and thanks Annastasia for giving it more detail, I didn't know about the spots thing btw, I thought it was just a color morph. :)

I knew what a "Opaline" and a "three spot" gourami was, but all you said in your second post was "BTW... an Opaline gourami is just a color morph of the Three-Spot Gourami" which didnt tell me what a Cosby gourami was. See we dont call them "cosby" gouramis here in Australia!

But now i know!
