Ok I have 6 all up....(not sure of their scientific names :p)
-two spotty brown ones
-two white ones with black eye patches and a tiny bit of orange (pandas maybe?)
-two greeny/emeraldy big ones.
The greeny ones are extremely hyperactive and nothing bothers them and they swim everywhere even around the top of the tank when they are playfull....
The panda ones come out and about but arnt as nutty as the emerald ones....
And the spotty ones harldy ever come out and sit under the driftwood all day....
So does each breed of cory have there own characteristics? Or are mine just like that? My favourites are the spotty ones (they are so cute!) and I want to buy more, but not if they are just going to hide from me all day! :dunno: :dunno:

In watching mine I have noticed that lighting, temperature, ammonia/nitrite levels, and amount, tend to affect them.

I had my Aeneus in my lower tank for a while w/ no lights (had to move them up top) and only a few male guppies. They lost interest and just hid away. I moved them to the top tank with good lighting and the other 4 Corys and now I see them all the time.

You have gravel, right?

The best way to get to see your cories is to change to sand. The difference is amazing, they're like different fish!

No can do...that would be a mission and a half...ive just had my tank for a month now and all the plants are growing nicely and the water is cycled...nearly time to get my discus!! yipee! To try and change it all to sand would be a nightmare I rekon :( poor little corys will have to make do!

Ooooo wait I was just reading another thread and it was saying how corys go into a T position if they are about to breed and this is how my spotty brown corys always sit under the drfit wood, maybe thats why they never come out! cause they are getting some privacy ;) cheeky little things haha or I might be getting excited over nothing :dunno:

Hi MissClaire :)

If your corys are up to you-know-what, you will see them depositing eggs on the glass or plants within a few minutes. If you don't see this, they are just being affectionate the way corys are with each other.

One thing, however, is that you should find out which corys you have, especially if you are planning to put discus in that tank. Most corys need cooler waters than discus require although there are a few, such as the beautiful C. sterbai that go well in warm water.

Here is a link that might help you. If you cannot tell for sure, at least try to narrow it down and perhaps we can help from there.

Hi MissClair :)

There are so many different corys that it is seldom easy to look at the list and pick the right one immediately, if you have no idea what they are.

Here's a picture of the sterbai. They can usually be identified by their bright orange fins. If yours has them, it is probably a sterbai and not the seldom found C.pinhiroi.

Hi MissClaire :)

Check out this picture of the bronze C. aeneus. This fish looks similar to the picture of the c. stenocephalus but is much more popular. Does this look like your fish?

It's hard to tell by color alone, because their color varies a little and the photos are also effected by the lighting. What do you think?

Why are they so darn cute!!
Before me and my boyfriend knew what they were called (corys) we called them moustache-i-os, dont ask why! haha (like pistachio but moustache instead)
yes Im a bit silly :fun:
