a few of my corys have been flicking over the last few days with no obvious symptoms! i have done 2x 30% water changes to see if this did anything but it hasnt. tonight i noticed 1 of my green stripes has a chunk missing from behind its right eye, this cory was also flicking a bit more than the others.
water stats are -
ammonia = 0
nitrites = 0
nitrates = 10
the tank is a divided 3ft containing just a few shrimp, some mts, gold stripe corys on one side and green stripe corys on the other. i recently about a week or so ago added 5 green stripes that were in quarentine for about 5 weeks prior to them being added as 1 died with no obvious reason and no symptoms showing so i left the others in there a few weeks longer. the cory in mention is one of the new ones, is feeding ok and has no spots etc just this crater/chunk missing. there is nothing else in the tank that would have done this so it must be some sort of bacteria/fungal disease and some of the others are also flicking. i have put him in a breeding trap still in the same tank to seperate him from the others and just done a 40% water change. there is no stringy poo as far as i know and no swollen or sunken bellys etc.

can anybody help me with this?

Could a fish or shrimp attacked him.
Any puss coming out of the chunk.
Any redness to the chunk.
Did the chunk start off as a sore or pimple.

What do the fish gills look like?

Can you issolate the sick cory.

Hi wilder,

i doubt it very much that it was an attack from another cory or a shrimp, as far as im aware there is no visable puss but the hole thats left is red. i didnt notice this before last night as my cory tank is in the garage so im not around it alot and when i am the corys hide away so its hard to keep an eye on an individual fish in there..... the gills seem normal. i can isolate him but some of the other corys have been flicking too so is it worth treating the tank?

I Would use a bacterial med for the sore looking chunk.
Could it be a ulcer.

Added anything to the tank that could be irratating the fish skin.

Do any of the corys have a greyish film on there body or fins.
Any excess mucas or slime.
is there a blue film on the fish.
Any yellow spots or gold dusting, or rusty coloured varnish on the fish.
Any scales lifting up.
Get a magifying glass to see if you can see any parasites on the fish.
Any red pin prick marks on the fish body.
Has the ph changed.
What the temp of the tank.
Any signs of darting or erratic swimming.
Do the gills look pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed.
Does the body look opaque with excess slime.

nothing new has been added to the tank except the 5 new corys, its pretty basic set up just sand substrate a couple of bits of wood, moss balls, floating frogbit and the fish/shrimps. i have always used the same dechlor in the tank and no other chems are added at all so it cant be that. as the tanks in the garage there has been no windows cleaned with chemical sprays etc so again it cant be that.....
ill go and take a look in the tank to see the other fish for any of the above but it wont be easy! as far as i could see last night they looked normal but ill take a closer look.

Needed to ask a load of questions to see what was causing the flicking.

Turn tanks light out also and shine a torch on the fish to see what you can see on the body and fins.

Scratching on objects in tank (bacteria, parasites, toxins)
----Twitching (bacteria, parasites, toxins, skin irritant)

just been watching the corys for about 20 mins and didnt notice any flicking.....
pH hasnt changed
cant see any abnormalities, spots etc etc they just look normal.
the bad cory is isolated in a breeding trap but is still in the same tank as the other corys.
tank temp is 24 degrees, quite low as its for corys.

Ok.
Let me know how the cory gets on if you don't mind.
Good Luck.

i will do wilder. would you recommend treating the whole tank with a bacterial med? if so which one would you recommend?
i have to hand-
interpet 9 internal bacteria med
waterlife protozin
waterlife myxazin
waterlife sterazin
will any of these be ok if so?

Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Hope your cory makes it :)
What type is he or she because never seen them before?

its a peru green stripe cw009 quite a rare species to get hold of and when available they are £15+ each.
the cory hasnt improved and ive now removed him from the main tank and hes in a bucket with interpet no 9, i think this is his last chance as hes very motionless and on his side alot of the time

Bless Him.
I agree it's not sounding to hopeful for him.

well since putting him in the bucket he is swimming about alot more, maybe because he has more room than in the breeding trap....! he is swimming a bit on an angle leaning to 1 side alot but is more active now. the only thing is i dont have a spare air pump as it broke last week and has been sent back for replacement....... typical
i just keep stiring the water every now and then but im back at work tomorrow so can only do this for the rest of the day!!!!! he is comoing to surface for air alot more than normal too probably due to no air pump....
im stuck for ideas now as he may pull through he may not but i really want to try my best for him.....
