I have a friend whos been using Coralline Stimulator for a few months now. His calcium levels checked out high a few weeks back when he got it tested at LFS. They recommended he stop adding calcium for a week so that calcium levels will deplete and come back down. During that time he still added Coralline Stimulator twice a week. Just yesterday he lost 4 chromies, 1 cleaner shrimp and 2 fire fish all in one day. He got another water test and his calcium level were even higher than last time at a dangerous level even thou he hasn't added any calcium. His corals are doing fine so far but its strange how fish one day to the next died.

My question is does Coralline Stimulator raise Calcium? If so is this the cause of the problem he is having?

All other parameters are normal and safe. Just his Calcium....

Corralline stimulator is designed to stimulate the growth of corralline algae. It does this by providing Calcium and other important trace elements. I fear he is adding to much if his levels are reaching dangerous levels. A good level to maintiain is from 400-500ppm.

You can add all the Corraline stimulator you want, but if you dont have sufficient light, none will grow. You also need a start culture. If you dont have any corraline in the tank, none will grow.

Why did he keep adding it if he levels were high, and an LFS even advised him to stop adding?

I agree, the main components to most corraline stimulators like "Purple Up" are calcium and iodine. It is a good rule of thumb to not add any component to a tank if you don't have a test kit to regulate it. Tell him he needs to get a calcium test kit and not any unless it reads that it needs it.
