Would coral sand be a suitable substrate for freshwater community fish such as guppies, mollies, plecos etc.

No, coral sand is full of calcium and magnesium which will harden your water and raise your PH. Desirable in marine or african cichlid tanks, not good for average community fish.

You can use pool filter sand and play sand (for kids sandboxes) which can be quite inexpensive.
