How about, when you do water changes, keep some left over treated water and make ice cubes to cool the tank down?

Ice cubes arent such a good idea, they do work, but can cause too sudden a change in the temp that it can stress and harm your fish. I killed 1/2 a tank doing that once.

Yeah I had to do just that very thing today.

With the soaring heat we're getting in Scotland at the moment, my tank temp was sitting at 30 degrees / 86 F !!

edit:

My fish seemed to enjoy the ice cubes  They were chasing after them as they floated around the tank.

I know its too bloody hot for my liking!!!! My tank was the same temperature unitl i did a water change with cold water.

I floated ice and it made no difference at all, I even floated 1 lt Ice bergs, no diff.

I tried the ice cube thing too and it has made little difference to tank temp, even hefty ice cubes have melted completely within 2minutes :( !
Im having to do deal with 34-35deagree heat in my tanks and i have already lost practically all of my livebearer fry, some guppys and some of my corys :-( !!
I've tried directing the flow from a fan onto the tanks, but it makes little difference :/ ! I don't know what to do, help!

Do water changes with cold water not help? It does with my tank but then again its only a two-footer.

Room coolers from homebase, sorted my problems in a few hours.

Where are your tanks based?

I have mine in the living room away from the window and have had no problems, I do live in Northern Ireland though  so maybe that is my problem.

Awesome i will try to get hold of one of them ASAP :hyper: ! Thankyou so much!!!

This heat is so bad though, its like 34-35deagrees in my tanks during the day and only 24-25 at night, im getting huge fluctuations in temp and i paranoid of losing anymore of my fish, i just feel like i am always getting replacement fish recently- i lost quite a few to internal parasites, then i had a finrot problem and now i have high fluctuating temperatures -_- ....

My apartment is very small and all the walls have windows, i can't fit my tanks in the bathroom or bedroom where ther is only one window as there isn't enough space...But you are probably right that the tanks being in sight of the windows all the time doesn't help much.

How much will a room cooler cost? Is it like having a/c?

air con unit from any DIY store.....we have 3, one in the home office, the living room and upstairs....bit chilly as i type this!

If you lived a bit closer I could give you a cooler for nothing as I don't need it here

I think you could probaly get one from b&q for under £20 that would do the job, no point spending a fortune as we don't get that much good weather
