Convicts

Yay! My convicts laid eggs and now they young are almost to the free swimming stage. I know its not much of an accomplishment but its still pretty exciting to me because its the first time I have bred the species. I have breed 4 or 5 other species before but never wanted to get convicts because of their infamous aggression problem. I have learned that their aggression is worse than I read! I have their tank right next to a grow out tank full of guppy fry and the convicts will attack the glass trying to get to the guppies!

Cool! The only cichlid more aggressive than cons at breeding time is the Jewel cichlid I swear that they'd try to kill rocks if they looked threatening

Problem now is what are you doing to about all the fry you will be getting now.

Wicked!! Dont be alarmed if this batch fails....as im sure you've read it sometimes takes a few attempts before they get it right...although you may luck out...Either way once you get them started they wont stop. Do you have a divider for your tank?? It might be a good idea just incase you run into problems...My pair has to be seperated after i see free swimming fry....My male becomes super aggressive and attacks his female so i leave the fry with him and he does a great job of raising them.

Well the fry have hatched and are free swimming now. It looks like most are pink convicts and the rest are going to be normal colored. I had to remove the male because the female became very aggressive towards him. His fins became very frayed and he was hiding behind the filter intake. Now she is trying to attack the guppies in the tank right next to her!

I have homes lined up for most of the fry already. Well not really homes but mouths. Most are probably going to be used as feeders for my oscars and the rest I will probably bring to work (I work at a pet store).
