right now i have 1 female i think (how do i tell) convict and a jack dempsey in my 55 gal i would like to get a few more cons and try and breed them do i need to get rid of the jack or will the cons fight it off to defend there young

how many more Convicts should i add, the one i have now is full grown i believe

you can sex cons by the female having an orange patch on her stomach area, males have a pointier dorsal fin, and i am not sure about ur other questions sorry, just wait a while for more people to answer

First off....Convicts are extremely aggressive....add breeding into that picture and you can have some serious trouble. The best method when trying to make a breeding pair is to get 3-4 female cons...then bag up your existing male and rearrange the tank....then introduce them all at the same time...this will hopefully produce a pair which you can breed with....you should make sure that you can return the other females which dont work out..this way your not stuck with more than you need...I've seen breeding convicts chase full grown Oscars away from there breeding site and even though your Jack may be able to handle it, it probably would be a stressful situation for him and anything else in the tank....Breeding cons will take up to 50-75% of the tank when breeding and defend it will everything the've got. Hope i helped a little.
