I saw these at a lfs the other day, I think they're cool fish. Anyway just curious, on the site I linked too it said you coul put these in a 20 gallon. If I just had one fish could I get by with putting in in a 10 gallon.

I'll have to say no to that.... sorry. I think others will agree with me here, a 10gal is too small for a fish this size, the will grow about 6inches and they will need alot of room to swim about. personally i think a 20gallon is a bit on the small side as well...... I have a fish simmilar to a convict in a 30 gallon long tank and I think that tank is a good minimum size because of how active they are.

i've got one, but also I could see a pair working......

keep in mind , my tank is not a regular 30 though, it's a 30-"long" meaning its only about a foot tall/wide and the rest is in length. not like a regular 30 which would be much taller and less long

I'm Really glad to hear people talking about the size problem here rather than compatibility, Convicts get the brunt of all the compatibility discussions.

This is how I learn things, I ask the experts questions.

At least 3 or 4 in a 30 gallon tank. The suggested size for breeding them is a 20 gallon long. They can get up to 6", but they often don't, especially if you breed them as soon as they can.

Other than festae and neets, convicts are probably the best parents around in the cichlid world. What that means is they will harass or kill anything near their fry, or die trying. A 20g or 30g might work for some professional breeders but shouldn't be recommended for normal aquarists like us.

I wouldn't add anything more than a single breeding pair in a 30g in any circumstance.

i dont think that would work even for breeders to be honest.

i wouldnt put more than 2 cons in anything less than 125g and even then some people will think thats not big enough.

and yea 20g is fine for BREEDING. not living out there life as a pair.

oh and before anyone gets a pair of cons they should have plans to rehome about 200 fry a month.

awesome fish lol.

Ha lol, "and yea 20g is fine for BREEDING. not living out there life as a pair."
You mean that a male and female convict dont nessiserily breed when they are together? Thats news to me lol.
