Can I put 2 convicts (a male and a female) in a 29 gallon? Would the do better in a planted tank? What is the best substrate for them sand or gravel?

Many websites say a 29 gallon is fine, but I just wanna make sure.

29gal would be okay as a minimum, with nothing but the convicts in there.

They will rip up any plants, and they do better on a sand substrate, so they can dig. :good:

Yeah it'd be a convict only tank, so should I get plants? Plastic or real? I'd also have a broken flower pot in there.

could have some plastic plants. I never had plants with mine and they were fine.

Have a few pots and rocks scattered about, give them plenty of choice for nest sites. :good:

That setup up would be good. I would go with fake plants as they will move them a lot. The broken flower pots will be great for them, even full flower pots are good too. Oh and be prepared for fry.

Why couldn't I add real plants wouldn't they be the same as fake plant. Are they more apt to uproot real plants or something.

Well it all depends on the root system on the plant. Some live plants can be a little tough to get out (well for a fish). But in the end, they can kill the live plants. But you can try some java fern or another tough plant and see how it goes.

some plants would help them feel more comftrable, and, just from what ive heard, 29 may be a wee bit to small for convivts. THEY ARE VERY AGRESSIVE. unless you have a female and a male
