My m8 keeps convicts with malawi and other african cichlids. His convicts are being aggressive to his african cichlids and he is fed up. I said its because they are american cichlids and he said loads of people keep convicts with african cichlids.

Am i right or is he?

He was going to out his convitcs in his external filter because of aggression.

ask him to do a bit of basic research on fish keeping, thats not meant to be patronising, it will just help him enjoy his hobby a bit more and also help him not waste his money or time.

apart from everything else, Convicts and Malawi often have different dietary requirements, i dont really buy into the different water requirements that sometimes gets spouted, as Convicts can thrive in pH of 7.5 to 8.0

I would not mix them, its desperate fish keeping, hope he gets a plan sorted and things settle down for him

Malawis need overcrowding to reduce aggression, american cichlids need understocking to reduce aggression that is another reason why they shouldn't be put together.

But regardless of whether they go together if he doesn't want aggressive fish he shouldn't keep cichlids.
