I've had 2 20 gallon tanks with a convict in each for a while. Tey're not exactly "pretty" tanks since they're in my basement and I prefered to concentrate on my ram's tank upstairs. Course that's not gorgeous either because I can't seem to get this algae off at all and it's REALLY irritating...but to the point. I'm moving into my dorm later this month and I *hopefully* will be able to take one of my convict tanks, depending on what my roommate says (I need to call her and tank, haven't met her yet), and I'm also bringing my 2.5 gal betta tank with me. But I figure if I'm going to be having my convict tank in a single room shared with another person that doesn't even have a bathroom...well, I want it to be spectacular.

Right now it has a pretty nice looking peice of driftwood, some rocks, and a couple little plastic plants. The substrate is sand, but I am very tired of how hard sand is to clean. I mean, I even prefer the purple plastic gravel in my mum's goldfish tank to it, lol. I can take out the driftwood and the rocks and plants and everything and start with a clean slate. I know I want a few caves for my con, cause he loves the little ones I've made for him so far. What kind of rocks would you suggest? Should I go with slate? Right now it's some sort of sandstone I have in all my tanks. It doesn't look great. What kind of substrate would you suggest? I was thinking of going with black gravel, I like flourite but it's a little expensive, and I was considering brown gravel...but I really don't want the substrate to be my focal point. I won't even have it more than an inch thick. In my ram tank I have both live and fake plants, and frankly I can't afford good the lighting to make the plants look good at all. So I like plastic, lol. And I don't like the silk ones, because in my experience they fray.

Are there any websites that really show some great, but inexpensive, small new world tanks?

Also, I'd maybe like to get my convict a "friend" (haha, I know). I personally don't really mind having just him, hes my favorite fish and he's completely awesome, but I think it'd look a little better to have at least one other fish. He's not friendly, but he IS the friendlier of my two convicts, or at least the weaker. His friend definently needs to be someone who can hold there own, and preferably also be a new world cichlid. I was thinking maybe a jewel or a midas? Although I would like to get him a mate, there are just enough convicts in this world already and I don't need to add to that, lol. But yeah, he's my special little dude, my favorite of my fish, and I don't want him being nearly killed by another fish again.

I would like to have an algae eater, but when this guy was in with a pleco he never stopped pecking at him. So I was thinking maybe a snail that doesn't reproduce like mad...I remember hearing about apple snails and mystery snails or something like that but I know nothing about them. It's been a while, lol.

Any advice, and definently pictures and websites (with lots of pics, I have a lot of trouble reading large ammounts), would be very much appreicated.
Thanks!

i dont know about anything with a convict in a 20g... have tried a few diff fish and has never worked out..

i guess you could always try to get it a mate and breed them, but that might just end up being a disaster as 20gs is kinda small for more then 1 convict..

as for rocks, i just pick up rocks that i find.. but i have a pink elephant hamster house in one of my tanks, so dont ask me

As you seem to like your male con and i absolutely love mine....I'd hate to say that 20gal isn't enought to house a full grown Male convict...they are super aggressive even when you think they are docile, they will not tolerate anything else in a 20gal tank and will surprise you how fast they harm new inhabitants....it will be a species tank and anything that would tolerate a con will outgrow a 20gal quickly.!

I'd personally keep that sand substrate as its better for any fish then gravel and i've personally kept gravel/sand and i'd have to say sand is 10x better than gravel....estectically and maintenance wise IMO.

I use stones that i find in my garden/locally...make sure they are boiled and safe for use (no limestone/gravel etc,,) My male loves his single rock that he dug a hole under...Convicts are active diggers so give him a few rocks/overhanging plants and he'll pick a place himself.

He mentioned in his first post that he did not want to breed them....

oops..

but yea i wouldnt put anything else in a 20g with a convict..

i think a 20g is fine for one convict forever... they shouldnt get much bigger then 5''.. i dont think ive ever seen one bigger then 5''.. but just cause i havent seen it doesnt mean it doesnt exist !!

Yeah both of my guys are only about 4" and I've had them for probably a year and a half. My REALLY aggressive one tolerates my loaches, but they have tons of hiding places.

I think sand is really hard to keep up maintenence wise...but I guess I can stick with it. Maybe I'll just take an inch of it out or something.

The rocks around here are basically all red and ugly, so I'm basically gonna have to go to a sand/gravel place anyways. Might as well get something awesome.

Can I still get a snail?

I myself was fine with 2 convicts with 100+ babies in a 20g but I had to change about 35% of the water daily to every 2 days and eventually got rid of all of them.A slate is a great cave. It is perfect for spawning and a great way to get away out of light. As a warning, you might already know, convicts are becoming the bunnies of the fish world. My LFS is never willing to buy them and everyone on my block has one now!

Somebody was asking about what types of loaches to put with a convict pair and fry, and the loach people recommended something that was fast and mean and could easily stand up to cons. One sec, I'll check and see what it was.

ETA: I was wrong, it was catfish he was after, not loaches, but he wasn't looking for compatibility, just a scavenger strong enough to stand up to a convict, which is probably the best you could realistically hope for. The thread and all the suggestions it sparked can be found here. Hope it's helpful!
