Convict tank mates....

Depends on the size of the tank,PG,among other things. With a larger tank there is more room to stake out and defend territories, also more room for recipients of intended harrassment to take cover and flee to. These guys can be downright fierce with anything close to their size. Once upon a time I started out with 2 convicts that I was able to keep in a 50 gallon tank with a large pleco (about 10 inches) and an Oscar (about 10 inches also). Convicts took up residence in a flowerpot and never were seen much except for feeding time (convicts were 1 1/2 inch at the time, are now about 2 1/2 inches). Things were actually pretty tame for a while, and then the spawning bug hit them. These two little fish actually held off the oscar and plec to the other half of the tank during the whole spawning process and up until the time fry became free swimming.

Probably not what most would consider a community fish, I have found they do best in a species tank.

They can be kept with other aggressive cichlids outside of spawning time. If you want to avoid this, why not get 2 males or 2 females. That would make it much easier.
