Hi, I have a jellybean Parrot in my 90gal with 2 convicts, 2 Jewels and a few other none Cichlids. I have recently had a bad white spot incident which ended in the death of a few fish which was probably my mistake in the end. Anyway I am only 2 days into stability in the tank and my Larger Convict (the one with red stripes on their belly), always followed the Parrot about besides the first week were the Parrot used to chase it about. Now though they have set up camp in the corner of the tank were there are rocks and appear to be cleaning the rocks with their mouth and wafting their tails above them. They also chase everything away from the corner (not vicious, just a little telling off). Is this breeding behaviour, does anyone know of a Parrot and Convict breeding? Also it is mostly the Parrot cleaning the rocks but I dont know what sex it is. Thx in advance for any help.

When you say jellybean parrot do you mean a dyed blood parrot or a dyed/undyed balloon pink convict?Blood parrots can breed with cons, I have done this myself.Balloon cons(JB parrots)can also breed with cons as they are after all just convicts.

A pic of your fish would help.

THeres a pic from a while ago.

They are the best pics I have sorry.

Just found this one aswell, a bit better. He is changing colours there hence he doesn't look great.

They can and will breed, the resulting fish looking like mutant convicts. However if you say your con has orange stripes then its female and since male parrots are infertile you will not get any fry.

Hi T, thx for ur help. My convict doesn't have red stripes, more spots on its underneath (red). I always presumed this to be a male for some reason, I probably just read the profiles quickly and got mixed up  . Anyway they have now got eggs in the very corner of the tank which the convict is looking after, (I'm presuming these are just infertile) they are a brown colour. I have also found that the convict isnt anywhere near as viscious as I would have expected at protecting them. He lets other fish swim above his head without so much as a look, although it is probably because the other fish havent even looked at the eggs.

No,brown is good.If they go white/mouldy before 2 days they are infertile though. My parrots have tried to breed many times but none have suceeded(infertile).

Thx, I think I may be in trouble now though, my jewells have picked this moment to lay their own eggs. The Convict/Parrot have laid theirs in the front left corner and the Jewells have laid theirs on the right back corner of the tank. Both have pretty secluded territories and both dont seem too aggressive towards anything at the minute, infact the only fish they are chasing off are the other convicts, (friremouth and Convict) everything else they leave alone.

Anyway I need a bit of info on the Jewells now if u could. It seems the female is laying the eggs on the side and underneath of a large pebble I put there to create a territory but it doesnt seem the male is fertilising them at all. He is patroling the area but not going in once the eggs are laid, is this normal? I have a spare tank on the ready for both lots of fry if things get out of hand btw.. Got a 30"x12"x15" I was looking to fill with some sort of cory specis but I will keep it open for these now.

So any advice from more experienced breeders would be very much appreciated, thx in advance. The tank is the 90gal in my sig..

Oh I was just gonna ask, are all male parrots infertile?
