Hey,
I keep getting a recurring problem with cloudy water and wondered if anyone has an idea.
did a water test and ph levels nitrate etc are good. Last time this happened the woman at the fish shop said it was just lacking bacteria to break down the mess. But when i leave the tank as she suggests, i always seem to end up losing a fish.
I have been doing some water changes the past couple of days of about 10%
Tank is an 80 litre with a molly, 2 zebras and 2 dwarf gouramis............
any ideas?

How long has this been going on for and how long has your tank been set up?
Please don't be offended by this, but could you post your exact water test results (ammonia, nitrite, nitrae and pH)? I have seen many people (not just newbies) claim their water is perfect when it isn't, so unless i know you very well and trust you, i ask for specifics. The fish that die, do you see any physical symptoms?

This time, the lady at the LFS is actually right. It sounds like what you are experiencing is called a bacterial bloom, which is harmless. Fish dieing durring a bloom is not normal, so there is something else going on besides the bacterial bloom. The questions i asked above are a good place to start checking.

well im using test strips so its not really as accurate a reading as it could be.
two are now hanging near the top, should i do a water change again?
i can get an accurate reading tomorrow. had the tank for years-ish

Yes do an immdiate water change and increase aeration in the tank.

Take a sample of your water to the lfs as we need to have an accurate result in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, tell them to write the readings down for you. and invest in some liquid test kits as them strip are not worth the money as they are not that accurate.
Cloudy tanks that have cycled are usually due to lack of maintance and over feeding.
