Confused about mollies

I placed some fry in shadow all the time and some kept in place where sunrays can reach for 1-2 hrs. Fishes which get sunrays grow faster. What is reason for that? Can we get same sunlight effect with artificial lights?

Males are usually bigger than females, but older females will be bigger than younger males.

The easy way to tell makes from females with livebearers like mollies is to look at the anal fin - that's the one underneath the fish right in front of the tail. In a female, the fin is the typical fan shape; in a male it is rod shaped.
