Hey,

My platy is pregnant and she is getting harrased really badly by a male which must be the father. Do I need to seperate her even if im going to let the babies roam free in the main tank? Its her first time so im expecting a maximum of 10 because shes only a half sized platy so far!

thanks, orange shark

if your just going to let the fry swim free then no u dont need to trap her, i rarly trap my fish, but i only keep one type of livebearer to each tank.

As helter said you dont need to trap her if your going to let the babies be born into the tank freely. Unless, she is being extremely stressed and harrassed by the male then I would move her? what is your male to female ratio? I find that 3 females per every male platy works best. Good luck.

godknows what my male to female ratio is! Theyve bin with me from birth. Theres 16 and i think theres 7-8 males which isnt good! Im trying to sell/give away some but noone seems to want them. or people that did dont pm me back to tell me they dont want them

Normally livebearers give birth to much higher numbers of females. If you are looking at a batch of fry, it is unusual to have more males than females or even a 1:1 ratio. Fish that are harassing or being harassed should be separated. If it's one fish that is doing the harassing, removing it is best. If multiple fish are harassing, it is best to move the one fish being harassed. Good luck.
