Hi I have 5 sunset platies in my tank 2 males and 3 females! 2 of the females have recently given birth in the last week each to approx 30 fry which is pretty normal and both are showing signs of pregnancy once again (no suprise there really either).

My concern is that one of my female platies just doesnt seem right all the others swim about and are generally interested in each other whereas this one just mopes about and if someone disturbs her goes besserk and swims on her side and then jumps out of the water. None of her fins are clamped and personnally I thought she might have died by now but she seems to be holding on strong even though she occassionally gets picked on by my betta (not very often though it tends to be when she swims near him). Non of the other fish bother her at all not even the males who chase the other two about they just ignore her completely.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong with her as I havent got a clue?

Need more info on size of tank, plus full stock list of fish, how many and which kind, what is the temp of the tank, plus water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, swimming to one side also can mean parasites, so is there any laboured breathing, or flicking and rubbing against objects, do the fish have anything on there bodies, like being sprinkled in salt, check the gills to see if they are red and inflamed, or any excess mucas on tthem.

Its ok she died during the night! Not sure of the dimensions of the tank but I do have the following fish

4 sunset platies (previously 5)
1 Silver dollar
1 Betta
8 glowlights
6 Emerald eye rasboras
3 golden weather loaches
3 peppered corys
and probably a few fry

I don't know what the water stats are as haven't got a testing kit at the moment. I did do a 4 litre water change last night! Did have a bit of a problem with ich last week but that seems to be under control now and clearing up. All other fish are looking healthy and all acting normally. There is no rubbing or rapid gill movements.

Sorry R.I.P. Parasites can cause bacterial infections on top, as they only have to break the skin then bacteria enters the body.

Turns out my golden weather loaches turned out to be chinese algae eaters. I'm keeping an eye on the rest of my fish to make sure no more strange wounds appear.

Is there anything I can use to help prevent fish getting any more bacterial infections?

Only getting rid of the fish that are causing the wound, if the wounds are bad some fishkeepers put vasaline on the cut to stop infection, as there slimecoat protects them from desease so if you have poor water quality that is stripping the slimecoat away or open wounds it gives entry for bacteria.

Luckily at the moment all my fish look well and healthy with no wounds! My four platies have paired themselves off the darker two stick together and the two lighter have stuck together! in male female pairs! Am hopefully trading the 3 chinese algae eaters for a couple more female platies and also getting some ottos to eat any algae on glass etc!

I noticed one of the algae eaters gave chase to a platy last night but didnt manage to get hold of it! Not sure whether or not to confine the CAE to a breeding trap until the weekend as they chase each other around the tank but at the same time I dont want to risk any damage to the other fish!
