Okay, so I really don't like my tank as it is, I started it up and then decided to go planted, so it's just got a sand substrate. I have a basic nutrafin c02 system and 2wpg of light on a 35gal. I'm thinking of completely taking the tank apart and then starting anew, with some sort of fertaliser substrate, like eco-complete.

If I were to do this, could i add the eco-complete, put the sand on top, and then fill up with water straight away? I'm thinking of doing it all in a day, so my filter media won't die.

Then I'm thinking of getting alot more bogwood and plants and doing a proper hardscape. :good:

Would this be possible or would I have to get rid of my fish and start all over again?

I would NOT cap EcoComplete with Sand. Part of its very useful properties is to absorb nutrients from the water column / fish poop.

Order your plants etc & wood & rocks. When plants arrive, so full planting that day:

Tansfer some water & all fish to a bucket (or whatever) and filter and heater and keep that lot running.

Empty & clean tank, fill with EcoComplete to a depth that suggested, fill to about 1" of water above substrate, plant away.
Then CAREFULLY transfer 50% of water back in, transfer filter, heater & fish back into now planted tank.

Transfer rest of water / new dechorinated water.

Job done, no faffing about.
