Having lost around 40% of our fish through a virus,I was wondering what fish would live happily with what is remaining in our tank ?

Tank is 170 ltrs and we have the following fish left:

GOURAMI X 3
BN PLEC X 1
SWORDTAILS X 5
TETRA X 6
GUPPY X 2

The virus appears to have gone, but We wont be restocking until the new year,so any ideas ?

Gourami and tetra are LARGE groups of fish... can you be more specific as to what specie of each you have?

Hi Eagles,

GOURAMI 1 MALE AND 2 FEMALE.

SWORDS 1 MALE AND 4 FEMALE

TETRA 6 DONT KNOW FOR SURE SOZ

GUPPY 2 MALES

you need to specify the type of gourami and tetra

Gourami - dwarf, honey, 3 spot, banded, etc.....

Tetra - neon, lemon, bleeding heart, penguin, etc.....

if you don't know, have you got a picture or can you find one on the net to link to?

Hi John,

As Zoddy says... we need as specific information regarding the SPECIE of gourami and tetra as possible.

You don't want to overstock your tank. That's why it's important to know which species of gourami and tetra you have. An overstocked tank needs a lot more care, water changes, additional filters.....and it causes stress in fish, which then makes them susceptible to diseases. Stress lowers the immunesystem, and things the fish would normally be able to fight off now has the opportunity to make them ill.

One good thing is the BN Catfish is compatable with just about anything. There are advantages to being armoured after all.

Neon and glowlight tetra
pearl Gourami
Tuxedo guppy

I agree, the larger the shoal of the neons and glowlights, the better they will look. I'd say maybe 9 of each, but at least 6 of each.

You are pretty devoid of bottow dwellers, so I would suggest some cories - a nice shoal of 6-9 would be very active and go nicely with the BN plec. I'd stick away from the smaller varieties and go with a medium sized cory, like julii, trilineatus, aeneus, or peppered.

Thanks for the ideas. Do Corys get along with gravel subtrate ?

I have kept cory's in very smooth gravel and they where healthy and happy (no barbel damage) but I think it was the gravel substrate that did in my first lot of Pandas and Trili's. Cory's really will be happier on sand, and will have a field day mining in the sand and bulldozing it around the tank. To keep my plants in place I use some handfuls of smooth gravel and top cover it with more sand, at least then the Cory's can't uproot the plants before they get a chance to set roots.
