I've seen in various places, that Clown Loaches are not thought to be compatible with Guppies in a community tank, but I cannot find any reason for this. Can anyone advise why?

I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be compatible but I don't have any of either so I'm definitely not an expert on them. Try asking in Livebearers or Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids sections. They will know better in there.

Hi,

Clown loaches will be fine with guppies, my loaches are in with tiny fish no problems (they eat platy fry though so would probably eat guppy fry). A lot of places recommend larger fish to live with clown loaches as they grow up to 14 inches long.

As clowns can live for 40 years and most small tetras live 5-8 years i plan to stop replacing small fish as they die off then eventually have a group of 6 or so rainbow fish with just the loaches and which ever fish are still around. My biggest clown is only 5 and a half inches at the minute so it will be a while before this happens.

Clown loaches are totally compatable with guppys, same goes for other common livebearer fish out there with clown loaches, the only thing you gotta look out for with clown loaches really is their size as they can grow to a foot long and thus need a large spacious tank to be kept properly  .

They can live for 40 years..!! Wow. never knew that.
