Hello, i recently got a tank and started with guppies and they are doing quite well right now. But i was considering buying some differnt types of fish to populate the tank. I wanted to get dwarf Platies but i dont know if they are compatible with eachother or not. Also, does anyone know if their are any types of aquatic frogs that do well with guppies? I would be most grateful if someone could help me out. thanks,
kirk

According to the size of your tank....you could add a variety of livebearers to your tank. Swordtails, platies, and mollies go great with guppies. Cory cats go good with them too.

I see no problem with african dwarf frogs, just know they need to be feed special food like blackworms and with something like a turkey bastor near where they are at the bottom.....because they aren't the brightest nickels on the block when it comes to eating....they don't go to the top and get flakes like everyone else. They would starve to death with this approach.

Also make sure they are african DWARF frogs and not african CLAWED frogs. They look similar accept the clawed frogs will eat your fish when they get bigger! The dwarf isn't a fish predator and will be harmless, plus he lives up to his name and stays at a smaller size. One key to telling the difference in the two is to look at the eyes. The clawed frog's eyes are more at the top of its head closer together, and the dwarf frog's eyes are more on the sides of its head. Also...if its an albino frog.....he is definately not a dwarf frog. Didn't know if you knew all that about them or not....just letting you know in case you didn't. :)

Dwarf Platies are wonderfully compatible with Guppies. Mine are currently living together in peace and harmony, and look so lovely together.

African Dwarf Frogs would make a good addition to the tank, but, yes, they do need to be fed live or frozen food, and special care needs to be taken to make sure they get it. The best way to tell an African DWARF from an African CLAWED is to look at the hands. If they're webbed, then it is a DWARF. If they are NOT, then it is a CLAWED. My frogs (I have a trio of African Dwarf Frogs) have lived quite happily with both Dwarf Platies and Guppies, and with Albino Cory Catfish.

I have African dwarf frogs (2) in a tank with tiger barbs, glass cat fish, corrys, swordtails and pristellas (tetras).

The frogs are brilliant - love them to bits - but they much prefer either meat or live food. The frogs will hide for days unless there is meat about.

I feed them frozen bloodworm, frozen daphnia and I've even put in the tank tiny bits of cooked chicken. If there is one thing guaranteed to get the frogs out into the open it is meat! And sadly this includes the live fry of the swordtails. One of my female swordtails produced fry when it was not even vaguely obvious that she was pregnant. once the fry were out we obviously couldn't catch them but the frogs certainly did their bit to deplete the population fairly quickly. The other fish sat outside of the plants that the fry were hiding in awaiting their opportunity. The frogs went straight in there and found them! Ain't nature wonderful!!!

Have fun - love those froggies
