I currently have a pair of bolivian Rams in my tank. 28usg tall. I just love the apistogramma cacatucoides (cockatoo)or the njisseni (panda dwarf) and was wondering about compatability. I know most advice is 20usg per pair, but I have plenty of hidey holes and time out zones as I call them... Any help would be appreciated . thx

hi,
if your tank is around 30"L X 12"W X 18"H i would say you could those fish

Thats great news-- One thing I forgot to mention (am always doing that) - - I have an angel in the tank also.. Any issues forseen? :good:

take a look at my avatar the tank that both images are from was a 24"x12"x15"h tank, it had rams regularlish breeding and a trio of apistogramma agassizii, that never spawned cause my male didnt get big enough before I had to sell them  . I have also kept apistogramma's and rams with angels so no real concern here, as long as you have a good amount of cover, and thoughtfully set up tank all should go well

Take a look at my Sig, ive been keeping the very fish together with no problems for some time :)

Many thanks for all the feedback.
Have taken the plunge and purchased a pair of cockatoo's.
Will wait and see what happens - Fingers crossed all appears ok in the first few hours.

Sorry, one other thing. The left eye on my Ram appears to be bulgeing. Is there such a disease that can cause this POPEYE look? Should I be concerned. Only the male is affected. Doesnt appear to be having any issues swimming around. ?

There are a few diseases that can cause popeye but its usually caused by poor water and or bad conditions (eg badly wrong ph or hardness)

with the bad water conditions doing third to half water changes daily, and checking your filter should help, many rams can be sensitive to poor water

Also while I wouldnt buy any more fish while one is sick apistogramma's are happier in trio or more of 1m/2 f

unfortunately the popeye turned into a nasty growth, followed by a large growth appearing on the side.. medicated the tank, however buster passed away.. No other fish are showing symptoms . Fingers crossed. Will Mrs Ram be ok on her own, or should I find a new mate in a couple of weeks?
