I have an empty 10 gallon tank. For the last two years all i've had is bettas and I want to do something different. Im considering getting a school of white cloud mountain minnows. However, I still love bettas. Im thinking about a female betta. Will a female betta be as violent as a male betta or will the other fish be safe?

Hi barb-e :)

I'm going to move your thread over to the betta forum. I'm sure you'll find members who can answer your question in there. :D

females can be just as aggressive as males when kept on there own, there will be a hierarchy so that why we generaly have 5 minimum. (females!)

and if kept with males, the chances are his fins will be torn to shreds by the white clouds (although not a normal thing for this species, it still happens)

add the white clouds to the tank first
have plenty of plants in the tank as cover and security for the minnows and a male betta will be fine with them

make sure you have 6-8 minnows as they will feel secure in this number - minnows are not an aggresive species at all

read this thread from a betta and minnow owner

as pippoodle said adding the WCMM's first will help

just be carful on the temperament of your betta and you should be fine :good:

just have a tank spare incase things get a little hairy

yeah, i've got lots of spare tanks sitting around so if things dont work out I can move the betta to somewhere else. Thanks everyone.

No. White clouds are a coolwater fish and don't tend to do so well in temps over 25 degrees. Bettas need to be at 27 degrees minimum. Pygmy Rasboros would be a better choice. Galaxy rasboros are stunning fish if you can get hold of some.

I have four regular White Clouds, which were actually bought for a cold-water tank, but were much too greedy little eaters and would have starved out my Central Mud Minnow, who was dug out of a drying ditch, and whose tail is bent in two places just behind the body (although he gets around well) and a rather slow eater.
So, instead, they're in a 15 gal. with my betta and will be joined shortly by 4 Long-Finned White Clouds currently still in quarantine.
The compromise temp of about 77F seems to work well all around - they're all lively, colourful, active, and eat like little pigs - so while ideal circumstances may not be achievable for both, it doesn't appear to harm either type.
Temperatures do vary in the wild, so as long as they're well-fed and in good conditions, I'd think the numerous success stories suggest that the combination does work nicely.
The other fish, by the way, preceded the betta into the tank, (he was sold as a half-moon - and the temperment seems much better in such lines) which is a well-planted Walstad with plenty of cover.
There have been times when the tank has appeared to be empty, as everyone's dashing around in the bushes...
