I've got a new 120L (UK) tank coming in a few days that I want to make a community tank.

So far I've got the list narrowed down to:

3 x Dwarf Gourami's (1 male, 2 female)
6 X Guppies (2 male, 4 female)
8 or 10 x Neon Tetra's

I was also thinking of some Mollies but have a vague memory of reading somewhere that they like salt in their water and am not sure if the other fish would tolerate it.

I'm going to have a smooth pebble substrate, a couple of terracotta flowerpots on their side for hiding places and lots of silk plants (I find the plastic ones to be too hard and real ones just die when I put them in the boys tank - although that could be because they eat them).

If anyone has got some suggestions about what else (if anything) I can put in there it would be gratefully received.

Hi, Should have plenty room for what u want> however the Guppies will produce fry at regular intervals if M/F are together.

Yes, Mollies like added Salt, so maybe take off list.

Good luck. :good:

Ah, ok. Is it ok to keep just males, then? I read that if you're going to have males and females it's better to have more females than males to stop them becoming aggressive but I haven't found anything yet about keeping all males.

Yeah, I remember keeping just Males and they did not really bother each other > they are more colourful and would eliminate any future issues with loads of fry. (Unless you want to breed some?)

The chances are that you'd have very few fry survive in a community tank unless it has lots of hiding places.
All the fish you've suggested are quite sensitive and prefer a more mature tank.
Even though Mollies prefer salt in their water, they can live ok in a freshwater set up. They are also a good starter fish along with Platies and Danios to add when your tank has cycled.

Thanks for that. I knew the Tetra's needed a more mature tank (was planning to get them at Christmas as a present for myself).

I haven't looked at Platies yet but I saw some Zebra Danios yesterday and they looked very pretty and I was actually thinking of them.

Danios are great fish but they can be quite active and disrupt a tank that has more peaceful inhabitants.
I kept some Glowlight Danios with Minnows, Guppies, Tetras, Harlequins etc. and they caused havoc. They either chased my other fish or the others would hide away a lot.
Don't let that put you off though as some members haven't had any problems at all, that's just my own experience!
