I have a community tank...24 Gallons....It's been running for 8 months now so is mature...I have no issues with aggression of fin nipping...have suffered no losses for 5 months or so now...I carry out the normal regular maintenance etc...I have:

1 Gold Gourami
4 Silver Dollars
4 Tiger Barbs (They do not nip no aggression issues)
2 FM's
1 RTBS
4 Zebra Danio's
1 Pictus Cat

I want one (as a centre fish) or maybe 2 more of a smaller breed and thats it done...I would like another Cichlid but I'm unsure what to go for?

I would like something colourful..or full of character?

Plan is by christmas to upgrade to a 50 or so gallon tank...and keep this tank as a breeding tank....

Pictures or links would be good too?

Thanks

That tank is going to be quite crowded by christmas, especially given the fast growing nature of some of them. There are also a number of species in there that prefer vastly different water parameters. You may also find it will become increasingly difficult to get enough food down past that hungry pack of barbs, dollars and danios to your FM's.

Anyway in response to your question and disregarding the above, a few other cichlids that i have kept with FM's include blue acara, jack dempsey and red forest jewel. But whether you have enough room is another matter.

A JD in a community tank? Are they ok in there?

dont get any more fish untill u upgrade, you may want to do that soon because some of your fish will need it. first off the tiger barbs should be in a bigger group and like room to swim, its not so much a mater of them being aggresive but that they are more comfortable in bigger groups. Also some of those fish will be territorial and u will need more then 50 gallons for them as adults. I would say 75 gallons would be minimum for them plus another centerpeice fish.

No sorry i was just refering to the cichlids i have kept with FM's. However it depends on the community, i have kept them all with tiger barbs as dithers without problems. The dollars may be ok too, but the rest on your list would either be bullied or end up as lunch.
