Common Plec?

Hi, sorry I know you must all be fed up of people asking for ID's but ..... lol

I've got a plec of some description but I can't figure out for the life of me what types he is!?

body and fin shapes and stuff make me think he's either a common or sail fin plec but his colouring is different from any pictures I've seen of either of these! He's coloured more like a vampire plec - when I bought him he was really pitch black with white spots all over him but in the last couple of months his colours have changed a bit as he's grown - he's got a more brown-tinged general colour now and the spots are cream rather than white!

does anybody have any ideas? sorry i don't have a pic - I'll try and get one at the weekend if it'll help.

Oh and when i bought him (about 2 1/2 months back) he was only about an inch long but now he's about 4! Basically I'm worried that if he's a common plec he's going to outgrow my 4ft tank long before I'm in a position to upgrade to a bigger tank! but I love him and don't want to get rid of him - so at least if I can figure out what he is then I can have a proper think about what I should do that's guna be best for him!
