I've kept tropical fish for almost a year now (but I'm ashamed to say that I've not been here for months and months :*) )

I have two common plecs - both were very small when I bought them, and before anyone tells me off - I know they'll grow to be huge, and yes, I do have plans for them when that happens.

When I bought them, they were equal in size (small) and one was slightly darker than the other.
Now, about 8 months down the line, one has grown an awful lot (very fleshy), and has become very very light. The other hasn't grown all that much at all, and looks small next to the first, and is very dark.

Can someone say that this is ok, and that they, like humans have different growth potentials and colourings?!

Thanks in advance! :thumbs:

sounds to me like one is getting all the food ;)

do they look the same shape etc - just a different size?

they might not be the same species...

Common plecs will go lighter in color when they are stressed, i used to keep mine in a 50gal together and they were always fairly light in color which i used to think was fairly normal, but when i upgarded to my 125gal they are extremely dark in color now.
Common plecs can turn into bullys at feeding time, and while they are unlikely to physically harm each other as they are one of the most peaceful large growing plecs out there, they will try and prevent other plecs from eating food even if theres more than enough to go around.
To make sure you have 2 common plecs on your hands, heres a link with lots of pics and info on them;
