Columnaris

And my tank water now as it stands is Amonia 0.50 Nitrite 1.0 Nitrate 0.50 PH 8.2
The tank has been up and running for 3 weeks now. Ammonia and Nitrates has remain consisiant and hasnt moved for over a week but Nitrites are slowly rising. Like i said before, i think adding cemicals to deal with the Columnaris messed things up abit.

If you are worried about the meds/chemicals you have added to your tank interfering with the cycle then add some activated carbon to the filter media, this will remove any medication in the tank.
Once the tank is cycled (a long journey) it is time to think about the Columnaris. personaly i think it will be long gone by then.

Do you think so? I hope so.
Yea when i finished treating with meds i did a 25% water change and put fresh new activated carbon in my filter so i dont think there is any meds left in my tank water. I jus think as a result it caused my tank to cycle from scratch which is why its taking so long to get very little results.
Now its fishless and i have a much better understanding, im gona go with Ammonia cycling which will hopefully speed things up abit.

Just for future reference, have you or anyone had any success eliminating Columnaris with Maracyn or Maracyn Two without effecting the benifical bacteria/biological filter? If not, whats the best way to deal with Columnaris without interfering with the benficial bacteria?
The more knowledge i can absorb the better. I wanna be well prepared the second time round!
Thanx for your comments and support much appreciated!

I read your thread last night and out of interest looked up columnaris(quite nasty), sorry to hear you had to deal with this. From what i have read it is hard to cure unless you quarentine effected fish early and treat. Fingers crossed you don't experience it again.

Keith.

Yea it wasnt very pleasnt! Fingers crossed i dont get it again.

Can i just ask, do u know or does anybody know if i cycle my tank with pure Ammonia, keeping the ammonia level at 4.0, when its fully cycled will there be anough benifical bacteria to fully stock?? Or will it b a case of addin 2 fish at a time over a period of time??

The recommended level of a ammonia that can be processed into nitrates in a 12 hour period is 4/5ppm, this then gives you a enough beneficial bacteria to fully stock your tank.
