Hi, i have 4 platys in my new tank. I am cycling with them very carefully, daily large water changes ect and i am not using them as a cycling comodity, i love platies and want a tank full of them. I didnt know about fishless cycling before finding this forum. Anyway, the yellow male platy i have, i noticed that his dorsal fin has gone very pale. its not furry or cotton wool like so i ruled out fungus and ihe doesnt have any white spots on him so i ruled out ich. The other platies are fine. He is eating ok and everything. I realise that my water parameters are less than ideal with cycling but they are as follows. Ammonia 0.25 Nitrite 0 nitrate 10 PH7.4. I have been doing 50% water changes the last few days. Could this be a sort of burn from ammonia? Thanks GRJ

I doubt it, Fish often change colors especially when stressed and as your tank is cycling this is most likely the case. I would continue what you are doing. Seems like your on the right track. If you are still worried just wait for another response or bump the topic up. Continue doing your daily water changes and check those stats often and try to keep the ammonia and nitrite as low as possible. Good luck.

Maybe put him in a smaller tank for just him, because colourloss is usually a red flag for stress.

Thanks for that. I was thinking it was maybe stress but wanted to make sure. I think he is old and the big water changes are a bit stressfull for him, but its that or ammonia poisoning and that would be much worse. At least he is eating and seems quite active. Thanks for getting back to me. GRJ :good:
