Hello,

I have had a cold water tank for 16 years now, and have had several tanks but I currently have a 60 litre Biorb. I have kept fancy goldfish which all lived to be around 10 years old, but now it's just Giddy (rocket goldfish around 10cm body around 10cm tail) who is as old as my hobby and showing no signs of going anywhere

I would like to move my hobby up a step and keep tropical fish, and as sure as i am that giddy would love warm water I wanted to see if anyone had experienced problems with goldfish in warmer climates? I did consider a second tank; however, my boyfriend has already vetoed that idea (spoils all my fun) :(

I also wanted know if doing this in a Biorb would create any issues with the ceramic media and the bowl design? I have tried to look for information on tropical Biorbs but can only find Marine info. (Probably something to do with my "amazing" internet search skills :) )

My initial thought on stock would be smaller fish as even with a bowl design they would have plenty of room, however with such a big goldfish in the tank I'm worried they would be seen as a special dinner treat! So any advice on which fish would work best in this tank would be much appreciated.

Any suggestions or advice welcome, Burley

Hi Burley

giddy will not like the warm water i'm afraid, his metabolism will speed up due to the warmer temps meaning he will be producing a lot more waste, and which will ultimately result in his death,

You'll also find he'll eat any small tropical species

You can buy heater kits for the biorb so keeping it as a tropical is fine however: 6G isn't a lot of water and to be truthfully honest isn't suitable for a goldfish even.

If you got another tank for giddy, you could go for a male siamese fighter, or a few male guppys or platys or something like rasbora or minnows

Hi,

Thank you for your advice, unfortunately we only have a small flat at the moment so getting a second tank isn't an option I'm allowed to consider at the moment.

With him being 16 years old I'm kind of attached to him so if making it warmer could harm him I don't want to risk it. (Secretly trying to beat the worlds oldest goldfish record :))
Sounding like I'll have to wait until we have a house and I can have a different type of tank for each room :)

If anyone else has any other advice it would be greatly appreciated.
