akkk cant fight the stain, it just stains too quickly faster then my water stains, my water is a bit brown and i dont mind it much its just that it inhibits loads and loads of light getting to the bottom of the tank..... what should i do 1?!?!? carbon time ?? is there a way i can treat the wood to make it stop leaking !! i have moss attached to it thats why i dont want to get rid of the wood yet :)

Adding a quality activated carbon to the filter can reduce tanins markedly, the stuff doesn't last very long though. If you have a piece of wood that is leaching a lot, you will probably have to replace the carbon several times.

....tear the moss off, wash and soak the driftwood in the hottest water possible for a week (while floating the moss or cramming it under some object).....tie the moss back on with black/brown thread and it will reattach within a week

i really, really, really recommend you dont try other ways of covering up the problem because it will not go away....i know the moss looks nice but it will grow back fine - you need to rinse/boil that driftwood in scalding hot water for days

im gonna use both advices, Lateral the carbon filter, i have a hob, is it just a bag or something ? or does it really need to have all the water passing through the filter pass through the carbon bag ???

im gonna boil the wood !!! BOIL IT UNTIL IT CANT TAKE NO MORE BOILING!!!!!!

A lot of people boil their bog wood, I assumed you did not wish to do that.

The carbon works as a chemical filter, the water should tflow through it to get reasonable results.

actually the wood when i purchased it did not leak a significant amount of tannin into the water for well over a year! and then i sawed it in half.... thats a new thing :) im gonna get my carbon pads next week :D

yea, sawing will definitly do that - everytime i cut driftwood it leaks much, much more than it originally does when i buy it..let us know how it turns out for you

as for the carbon, yes it is just a bag that you drop into your HOB filter - put it on top of the sponge so that the sponge filters out debris and that water then goes through the carbon which chemically removes everything else

well already purchased the carbon bag and boiled the wood for as long as i could take it and noticed something weird... the wood became sticky and when you hold it your hand turns brown !!! tannin stains !! on my shirt, the dog haha everywhere... even the pot... :(

i decided to remove the wood and search elsewhere, is there a kind of wood that wont leak tannin ??

btw my water is a bit clearer now but i dont think the carbon pad is doing a great job so im gonna peak up the water changes to get my water clear and er... transparent :)
