Hey everyone. I just read an article about using half a coconut to create a fish cave. Has anyone read/tried this?

just cut it in half, take out insides, boil it untill hair comes off and your ready to go.

Yeah, I saw that. I was wondering if anyone used them because I heard they can lower PH, which would be a good thing in my case.

the hairs cause the ph change. when they decompose in the water they release toxins.

what you have to do is remove the meat , milk and hair.

to remove the hair you boil the coconut- change water and try and remove more hair off the coconut by sanding it down. and then repeat until the cocnut is bare. real cheap

Thanks backley. I figure that a coconut would be easier than getting more clay pots since the grocery store is right behind my apartment. Sounds like I have something to do the rest of the week :)

lol backley420 he wants to change the ph, you need to leave the hairs on then. and you repeated what i said earlier

*Cough* SHE *Cough*

:) Whether or not the PH changes is fine with me, I was just curious if anyone had done it and could possibly tell me how much it altered it.

ok..................

but anyways. ya i have done it. one fish died it in once so i took it out. i don't think that was the cause tho. also kinda hard to make it match my decor.

Got coconut caves in my cichlid tanks and managed to get some Java moss to grow on it, looks much nicer and natural now :good:

was it my coconut cave thread? I now have a cave in each of my betta tanks and they love them, we just snapped a hole in them with pliers, sanded it down and boiled it. I will get some ricca when I can and try to grow that on it. Or java moss. They look really great too.
