I bought a coconut cave from the pet store, it was in the reptile section. I want to add it to my tank so my betta has a place to hide. Do i need to do anything to it for it to stay put without floating? It has a hole at the top. also do i have to worry about it rotting?

I would just push it into the gravel a little and it should stay. Is it a real coconut or replica? I would think that if you bought it at a petstore it would be fake. This shouldn't rot.

i'm pretty sure it is real

i have one in my tank for my betta. they look really nice and yes they are real. no worrys about rotting i got told that shouldnt happen... The shell of the coconut is really tough so it shouldnt rot in my eyes either... push it into the gravel and it will look a little better then just 'sitting' there... hope this helps :)

Just be sure to sand down the outside of the shell as they can sometimes be quite rough and it could snag your Bettas fins :good:

I got lucky then, i got a nice big smooth one for only 99P

Got mine for 50p, plus a few cuts! And i got some coconut to munch on while i made it :p

It was actually surprising how easy it was, i grabbed a few coconuts (2 for £1!) and sat in the garden for the sunday afternoon making my caves, then boiled them for about 3 hours. Indi loves them :p

i might make a few more and do it myself lol... mine was from the shop, still a bargin though. i will pm you asking how you do it

I made one for my future betta too. I used the whole coconut and just drilled 3 holes then picked all the 'flesh' out with a screwdriver-great fun!
Because mine is whole, it fills with water which keeps it weighed down.
I didn't boil it either but it's been in the tank for a few weeks now and no discoloured water. The coconut I used was about 3 years old though-maybe that's why?
