I said it's not worth having,

It's only effective if you're using an atomic diffuser which dissolves 99% of the CO2 in to the water, the output very inconsistent which will promote algal growth.

The yeast setups do work, but not like actual pressurized CO2. The normal running value for DIY is 15ppm, where pressurized runs at least twice that level. A unstable co2 level can defiantly led to algae. Yeast is known for being relatively unstable do to the fact the mixtures do not put out a stable amount of CO2. IMO it is also a total PITA to maintain a yeast setup so it provides the most stable output it can.

I personally will either run a planted tank w/o CO2 or used pressurized CO2. I tried the yeast DIY stuff once and have no desire to use it again, I would rather go w/o CO2.

Pressurrised CO2 has been pissing me off for the last month. Both my setups have been down. The shop I was using to fill my tanks closed down permanently. They would just fill my tank and give it back to me in about 3min 5lbs for $10. All the other places I'm looking at do only tank exchanges(rather not exchange my very new tank) or its a week return if I want my tank back... I tried putting my 20oz paintball on my 55gal, took me over an hour to get it setup right. 4 days later its empty, so I have a leak somewhere .

A chocolate fireplace sounds yummy though!

this can be controlled by lenght of photo period.

I find water circulation or lack of a bigger problem for algae in a heavily planted tank

B-)
