Whats everone's thoughts on Co2 systems? From what i've read they work very well.
Any downsides?
Shop brought or DIY?
Do you still need to add plant food?

Adding CO2 can promote excellent plant growth, oxidation will also be increased through accelerated photosynhesis. It also tends to lower pH a bit, which is also good in most tanks.
The possible drawbacks are, that if you're tank is too sparsely planted or the CO2 distribution is too powerful, the CO2 might start building up to harmful consentrations, especially during the night time (assuming the distribution is continuous, as in most DIY systems it is), since plants won't be disposing it (light is required for photosynthesis).
DIY or commercial? Well if money isn't an issue you can install a commercial solution which uses pure CO2 from a pressure bottle and distributes it electronically. These cost usually several hundreds of dollars.
Then again if money is an issue, a DIY system costs somewhere around 5-10 bucks :p

Ive used a hagen unit but as my lighting is high over 5 watts a gallon i have to use commercial pressurised which im saving for.

The begin at £100, the hagen is about £20

How big is your tank and is it densely planted, what lighting do you have?

Yes the plants still need feeding

I just bought the Hagen system for £14.99, I will let you know how god it is / if it is worth it once i set it up!

andyM:

Depending on the lighting and type of plants in your tank, you might wish to go for CO2. Introducing CO2 makes your plants grow a lot faster provided they get other nutrients & sufficient light as well.

The drawback is if you have an imbalance of these then it might promote an algae bloom. And you will also have a lot of work trimming those plants every week :)

It's currently the tank in my sig. Within the next few weeks will be upgrading to 70ish g. Yes it very well planted. Not sure on the wattage, will have to check. My plants now grow fairly well. The tank used to be in bedroom that didn't get a lot of llight. Now it's in the lounge and gets plently (indirect so dont have algae problem).

I've got at least 1 Hagen Co2 system in all my tanks, my plants never did very well before, but now are growing really well, its also lowered my ph from 7.8 to 7.0 which is nice. :D

It lowers the pH level because CO2 is carbonic acid
I would get one if I had more plants
A start-up kit with fertalizer and other chemicals costs around 25$ in Ontario Can.

As you dotn know the watts its probably not that high since high watt units are specialist equiptment and expensive.

Id try the hagen co2 £15-20 unit and see how you go, I did notice a difference when i used it.

Im selling my old one is your interested
