Though more expensive, pressurised CO2 is by far the best (it's a far more stable CO2 source, basically resulting in less algae).

But while CO2 is mostly always good for tanks even if you have low light, you may not "need" it. Basically the more light, the faster the plants photosynthesise and the more demand they have on nutrients (carbon from CO2 or otherwise included).
What lighting does the tank have? You can likely get away with using a liquid carbon source (such as
SeaChem Flourish Excel), which is more expensive in the long run (but not very expensive for a 125l tank anyway), but simpler to use and may have a mild algaecide effect. Use with caution if you have shrimp though IMO.
