When I set up my new tank I am putting in 2 x CO2 units for the plants to inject CO2 during the day. My thought was to put a spare Hydor air pump that I have into the tank as well and maybe run that at night?? Is it possible to have them both running at the same time or am I just defeating the object of having CO2 for the plants by oxygenating the water??

Yup, your just gonna aerate the co2 out of the water by running the airpump the whole day....

See...

maybe run that at night??

if you can't turn off the CO2 at night, then running an air pump is a good idea to help keep the CO2 levels under control during the night. Have it on a timer so it can come on when the lights go out and go off again half an hour or an hour before lights go on in the morning.

Cheers

But what'll happen if you oxygenate the water, without increasing surface agitation? I'm pretty sure that the extra O2 won't dissipate the CO2. So far from what I've read and heard, its not a good idea to run an airpump at night because this will decrease CO2. But by how much? The important question is will it dissipate everything? It is important to maintain a constant level of CO2 (25-30ppm) for it to have the full effect, but I'm sure a smaller amount of CO2 in the water will still benefit the plants.

knowing your pH and kH and then using a table from chucks calculator (google it) you can find out your approx co2 ppm
