After reading the Basic-Guide-to-Lighting Article written by 'George Farmer' I have decided to introduce a Siesta period to my lighting to help tackle my Algae, I am opting to go for the 5 hours on – 2 hours off – 5 hours on approach.

I currently run my lights constant for 12 hours (first/last half hours are staged on/off to reduce stress to fish). I have recently (last 2 days) installed CO2 controlled by a night cut off valve which comes on 1 hour after the lights come on and turns off 1 hour before the lights go off.

The question I have is what should I do with the CO2 during the Siesta period, leave it running throughout the Siesta, turn it off just for the 2 hour Siesta or turn off an hour before through to an hour after the Siesta?

the siesta wont help, algae can adapt more easily than plants do so your plants will be more affected than the algae! Try running the lights for 10hours staright.

i run 2 tanks, one 10hours straight, the other like above. Both grew the same amount of algae, but the tank with a straight photoperiod, the plants grew better.

the CO2 is still switched on through the period.

I found that a siesta increased algae problems, since the fish probably don't enjoy it I would give it a miss
