I just came home from a weekend at a friends house to find my clownfish very sick. One of his eyes is sticking out and it looks like he has a cut/hole in his first stripe. He is swiming very strange spinning in circles and he is not eating. What can i do? This is my first saltwater disease. I just started with saltwater so i am pretty new and dont know much. Please help...

It's not sounding good if he's spinning, sounds like a lot of bacterial deseases on top of one other, which is hard to cure, can you issolate and try and antibiotic like tetracycline.

Thank you for the quick reply. Its to late to do anything tonight because all the stores are closed. As soon as school lets out tommorow im going to go pick that up. Anyone eles have any other suggestions? One more thing, should i isolate him tonight? or leave him where he is for now until i get the meds?

It would be good if you can issolate the fish as you don't want to be using a strong antibiotic like tetracycline in the main tank, as it will wipe the bacteria colony out, the hole did it start of as a red sore like an ulcer.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

Does the hole sound like this, not the writer of this information.

Ulcers- Ulcers are open sores located on the fish's body. Ulcers are sores on the body caused by bacterial infection. You need to make very sure your water quality is immaculate. Check your pH and Ammonia as well as your Nitrite readings. Ulcers usually are caused by the Aeromonas bacteria or more rarely Pseudomonas bacteria. The ulceration may appear with red abscesses, or red edges around the ulcer. In some cases it can become rather large and expose muscles. Symptoms: The fish has one or more open sores on its body or at the base of its fins. The sore has a red abscess or red edges. The fish may also have red fin edges or fin rot. They may exhibit lack of appetite and sluggish behavior. Treatment: Usually antibiotics are needed and this is done by a series of injections. ( A vet would need to see the fish and give you the necessary prescription). However this is not always the best option for individuals and a product by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals has a great product called Mela Fix that has shown great results in the healing of ulcers. It is easy to use and does not create issues with the water quality. (back to top) Koivet.com has more info on MelaFix here.

There is a small red spot in the middle of the hole but it is mostly white. I dont know how long its been there so i dont know how it started. Like i said i was away for three days and it wasnt there when i left. I had the water tested about a week ago at my lfs and it came back fine so i dont think its a problem with the water. It could poosibly be an ulcer im not sure. A friend of mine works at a lfs and knows alot about salt water. Ill have him come over tommorow and see what he thinks. All i could do for now is isolate him and im not sure if thats a good idea. I do not have anymore tanks to put him in. There all full. All i have is a bown and theres now filter or heater so its probably not good.

Today i went to my lfs and all the people working there recomended Maracyn so thats what i bought. Hes still not doing good but i just started the treatment so ill see. If he doesnt get any better by tommorow night but he still is alive, ill go to a different store and buy something eles.

Good luck fingers crossed bless him, adore clown fish all due to nemo.

Now it looks as if it might be spreading. My other clownfish has a small red dot under his mouth that he never had before and didnt have last night. I had my water checked today and everything came back fine. Im pretty confused as to what is going on. They were all perfectly healthy last week and if the water is fine, where is this all coming from? Anyway because of that red dot i didnt isolate the one fish im just medicating the entire tank. This fish still seems pretty healthy other that the red dot hes still jumps when he sees me coming with food and he still swims around. Should i be worried?

Sounds like you have a bacteria infection in the tank, i would do some water changes to dilute it down then add the med back to the water removed, does the red spot look like a blood spot.

Not the writer of this information below.
Regarding the small red dot, small pinprick like haemorrhages (called petechiae) can be due to a local lesion, a generalised septicaemia or toxaemia caused by acute viral and bacterial infections.
