Hi all

i was just wondering how often you feed your clownfish, once or twice a day? and what do you feed them?

Thanks
VM

Once here. Mine like a mix of mysis/brine/krill/roe (fish eggs from asian market). I also sometimes substitute Omega one marine flakes and/or pellets. When I go on vacation, they get pellets from the autofeeder.

Same as Ski, once a day - on a mix of

mysis/brine/krill/prawn and the occasional bit of mussel - i use mostly the frozen marine quartet

I prefer to feed them smaller amounts but over a longer time rather then a large amount all in one go (just person preference really). I normally give them a little bit of flake in the morning then frozen mysis, bloodworm or brine shrimp in the evening. At the weekends when im home I give them about a cube and a bit of frozen food but put it in a little at a time during the day (which goes between 4 fish, 1 fireshrimp and 3 peppermint shrimp). Some days I dont feed them at all though.

I probably overfeed my fish but at the moment its not effecting water quality so I dont see the harm in it (if you go to overboard though it will effect your water). I wouldn't want to dump that amount of food in all in one go though.

Theres pros and cons to both ways (small amounts of food over a long period or larger amounts of food once a day). With small amounts of food over long periods you have to watch your water quality but the fish get a much more natural feeding (rather than one glut once a day which wouldn't happen in the wild). Where as with feeding once a day its less likely to mess up the water quality (but is not as natural IMO). Both methods work though so totally up to you :)

Personally if I was you with your tank once it is fully stocked I would look into a continuous feeding system with food for both the corals and fish. Have a look at the link below. Not a scientific study by any stretch of the imagination but I have read of other people having good success using similar systems. On a tank the size of mine its not worth the hassle but on yours when fully stocked it might be worth looking at.

if you don't want to breed them then feed once a day or once every couple of days. If you feed them 2 or 3 times a day they will come into breeding condition and start to prepare a nesting site and become highly territorial. However, clownfish are pretty placid even when guarding a territory, (by comparison to most damselfish) and in a reasonable size tank most species won't cause any real problems to the other tank mates.
I feed mine on marine mix, which is a combination of fresh prawn, fish, squid, spinach and various other marine organisms mixed in. Raw prawn is also good for bringing them into breeding condition.

mine get half a block of gamma frozen twice a day. Then if im feeling nice they get a few flakes or pellets aswel.

didnt know they liked prawn though, going to try that
