Hey, well it's christmas and so my mother thought id would be nice to buy me a fish, anyway she came back with a beautiful clown wrasse that gets along great with my 2 barred red sea clownfish. anywho he scared the hell outa me cause when the lights went off he completely dissapeared, I later found out they brry themselves at night.

Bassically the problem is that he is constantly eating at my rock. the tank has been running for a month now so i haven't added and corals yet, what i would like to know is will this fish eat my rock till it's all gone and is he gonna graze my corals, also will eat make a snack out my shrimps and other inverts?

Thanx, and merry christmass :D

i dont think hes eating your rock. He's probly eating your coralline growth on the rock. I dont think they're reef safe. U could exchange it for another type of wrasse. Sixlines are good and active and the best reef safe wrasse in my opinion.

How big is your tank? These things grow almost 1.5ft long!
Definately not reef safe as they will destroy the entire stock and move your rocks where they want them.

Here is the general information on them.

Family
Labridae

Common Name(s)
Clown Wrasse, Red Coris Wrasse, Red Labrid, Yellowtail Coris

Scientific Name
Coris gaimard

Origin/Habitat
Indo-pacific

Size
14"

pH, KH, SG
8.2-8.4, 8 - 12, 1.021 - 1.025

Temp
72F to 83F

Diet
Carnivore: They feed mostly on hermit crabs, urchins, crabs, and occasionally tunicates in the wild. They can adapt to frozen foods and silversides fairly easily

Compatibility
Not reef safe. They tend to eat most inverts and may pick on corals. Keep only with larger fish.

Sexing/Breeding
Juveniles are a bright orange with white bands surrounded by black similar to a lot of clownfish thus giving them the common name of Clown wrasse. As they mature they alter in colouration drastically from the juvenile stage. Males develop a light green band along the body above the anal fin.

Notes
Clown Wrasse are fairly timid fish and startle easily. When startled or sleeping they tend to dart towards the bottom of the tank to bury themselves in sand. It's best to provide at least 3 to 4 inches of sand for them. They require a lot of open swim room.

Recommended Minimum Tank Size
48" x 24" x 18
