Hi i am new, I really need advice regarding my clown loaches urgently,
Yesterday a platy, no traces, i searched the entire aquarium, it could not be in the filter as grills are too narrow, I even searched out of the aquarium,
They have so far eaten alive 2 gouramis, 2 kuhlis, 2 pandas corydora,
My filter is constantly clogged as they tear my plants, anubias no leaves,

I need suggestions on suitable species, i have 5 Congos, 5 Neons tetra(was seven) 2 Clown loaches, 1 Platy, 1 Clown pleco which does not appear to eat vegetables, thats for certain, it has attacked neons so does anyone know if clown plecs eat other fish, :unsure:

Thanks

Hey

what size tank do you have ? What are your water stats ?

Ive had clown loaches, I cant belive they are eating your fish, same for the plec.

The plec is veggy ,likes bogwood and alge n stuff. the loaches like bloodworm etc, but dont eat other fish.

How big are they both though ? I know clown loaches can grow to 8-12" in the wild, plecs can get massive too and like their own terrortary.

As for gouramis, yes they do massacre your plants lol. I have 4 which are a pain, but i have half my plants that they wont eat, and the others well yes. Are they eating the whole plants or just uprooting them ?

Stu

Hi I just borrowed a clown loach a month ago for my guppy and platy tank.... The reason I borrowed him is because he loves snails..with a couple of weeks my snails were almost gone. He never ate my teenage platys or teenage guppies and they are very small. Most of the time he hid during the day and came out at night for the snail hunt. I also breed guppies and Platys and they have dropped babies in the main tank and I never saw the clown come out for the hunt anytime, he had his spot and he gaurded it.

It could be you are not offering your fish enough variety of foods and they are hungry, its a fish eat fish world but if your fish are well fed then your bigger fish wont eat your smaller ones as much anyway.. Do you offer your loach snails? You might want to introduce a couple of plants to your tank generally where there is plants there are snails or eggs...plants would also help the fry to hide.

Anyway just a thought. Im no expert either. Just thought a little extra imput always goes a long way.

Good luck.

Thats a good point, alot of fish will eat anything that will fit in their mouth, which is why I asked the clown loach size...

this is a weird one,
i had 7 clowns in a 260ltr tank, my biggest clown was over 6inch and lived with neons and not one was eaten. :huh:

Clown loaches and plecos are not predators/carnivores, but they are scavengers and will pick at any fish corpses they find lying around in the tank- however they simply don't have the right "tools" to kill fish and it is not in their nature to be agressive either. Not only is this fact, but i know it from experience too with keeping clown loaches and clown plecos.

I strongly suspect that your fish are dying for other reasons. To find out exactly why your fish are dying, we need more info on your situation;

a. How many gallons/litres is the tank and/or what is its dimensions (length, width, height)?
b. How long has the tank been set up for and what is your tank cleaning maintanence like water changes, clean filter, substrate etc and how often on average?
c. What types of fish do you have in the tank, their sizes and numbers?
d. Do you use dechlorinator
e. Does the tank have heating and what type of filtration do you use?
f. What do you feed the fish and how much on average?

What veg have you tried feeding your clown pleco? Are you aware they are from the "wood eating" family of loricariidae?;
