Hello all.

I have two clown loaches in a 50g tank. Now the larger of the two still small mayb 3-4" has been a bit weird and going to the top of the tank to get air I would assume. This seems very odd to me as I have plenty of plants a well filtered tank and a large bubble strip airstone along the back wall of the tank. Now all i have done in terms of oxygen is taken out my spray bar from my canister filter i did this so that not so much C02 would leave the tank. But the loach was doing this before I did it.

No other fish seems to be having issues thats including the other loach so im very lost here. The other thing that made me think it was oxygen related was one of my bristlenoses was on the side of the tank and he had red patches underneath him which concerned me. Tank is perfectly cycled and I have not lost a fish in this tank in over a year. I do weekly water changes and have done 2 in the last 3 days.

Im very confused and worried for the little guy as i LOVE clowns and I would hate to see him die and it worries me as my other fish could be lacking on oxygen aswell but are not showing signs yet.

Any help is much appreciated.

UPDATE

I have noticed my angels are gill pumping and are hanging around the top of the water now every now and then gasping air from the surface. I have put my spray bar back on but I dont know if this will fix the issue I hope it does. Is it possible there is too much water in the tank as the spray bar is under water atm?

sounds like an ammonia spike. What are your water prams.

I will have a look now but it would shock me if they had changed.

I had not checked my ammonia levels for so long as I have had no issues. For some unknown reason I must have chucked out my test kit for ammonia when I cleaned up all my fish crap last week. I tested my nitrites and they are at 0ppm. My PH has not changed at all but i dont have an ammonia test. However what could cause such a spike?

Something is wrong though and its 9pm here so i can not get a test kit. However I will do another water change tomorrow what is worrying me is im going away for two weeks in a week and these needs to be fixed.

Have you added any new fish recently? Or changed any feeding patterns/amount given/type of food etc

Are the fish showing any signs of fin clamping at all? Just wondering if there could be a bacterial problem going on.

No fish have been added recently plants have gone back and forth between my 3 tanks, however the issue with my loach started before i moved any plants. And my other tanks are prefectly fine.

Im not too worried about my angels dying over night or anything but the loach may just he is gill pumping really hard. Ive done a 50% water change today and will do a 25% tomorrow. I cant buy a test kit i literally have $0 in my bank (its nice to be a poor uni student). So they will have to survive on water changes its just very odd.

Thankyou for reply
