hi this evening when i got home one of my clown loaches is laying on it's side and seems to be dying, i have managed to fish him into a breeding net. he is so skinny and doesn't eat. The other clown loach is nearly twice his size. i got them both at the same time and they were both the same size. i did notice that one was growning, and just thought that the other one was a little slow grower. he is now just sitting there doing nothing. i have dropped a flake to see if he eats it and he ignores it. i can see his bones? anyone have any idea what is wrong? or why is it that one is growing and the other is now dying? :-(

You are going to need to give us way more information..
Tank size, stats of everything, any new additions, what else is in the tank, any other symptoms, any other fish showing symptoms, newest arrival to the tank, ect, ect, ect
The more information you give, the better everyone will be able to help you.
:)

OK It's a 240L tank, there are 6 Gourami's, 1 Paradise Fish, 2 Angels, 1 Krib, 1 Platy, 30 Tetra's, 8 Cory's, 1 Pleco, 2 Ottos, 6 Khulie's and 1 other clown loach.
The clown loaches were the last to be added and that was 3-4 weeks ago.

The water parameters are,
PH 7.2
Nitrate and Ammonia are 0
Nitrate is about 40 ppm,

All fish behaving in the same way for the last 4 months. This one Clown loach seemed to be the one that stayed the same size. I just thought he was a slow grower. The other one is getting bigger, he is nearly twice the size. I do weekly water change 40L of the water weekly... And clean the filters (I have two Ehime Prof 2, and the standad Rio one in tank) Every two weeks.

Just that now I looked at home and he is skinny, I can see his skeleton and also see his gal baddar thing (the one with the air bubble in it). Was he sick from the LFS?

thats alot of fish. How many water changes do you do a week and what % do you take out?

sorry didnt read bottom bit lol.

hi,
bless him i had this happen to mine im sure it was skinny disease,
where they have a parasite in the gut and they fail to gain weight and in the end they die.
mine was so thin and would not eat ,in the end i put him down after he did not eat for a week and was so ill he was unable to swim .
they get imported with this so i was told, theres not much you can do if this is what it is.

i know it's allot, i don't want to add anymore, i am very very very happy with the current setup, but do get annoyed when a fish dies, i will do a major water change this time round, about 40%

i have a friend that has about 50-60 odd fish in his tank of the same size, he has about 20 khulie's and another 10 cory's and loads more other fish. he said for a beginner 1cm of fish per L is the rule. once the tank has been running for a few months I can add a few more but slowly. his tip was to try to balance out top, middle and bottom fish. i think i have arrived at that... but what a shame about my clown loach... he is now laying on his side...

well i'm not too sure, come to think about it i have notice over the last few days he seemed to go to the food but as he got there he seemed to loose interest and keep swimming. he seems very weak, like he can't swim around at all anymore. he tries but goes back onto his side... :-( should i take him out the tank? and do the deed?

Sounds like skinny desease to me too, and the parasites have done there worst i'm afraid, once they get in this state not much to be done, sorry.

hi,
sorry for your loss :rip: .
there was nothing else you could of done.
if you ever get any more i would buy them at a certain size say 4inch, because at that size if they came with this illness you would see the signs, if they show no sign at that size id say thay were heathy.

Some one on another forum has cured a clown loach of skinny disease by using flubenol 15 - that kills parasites and internal worms etc although personally I would have used octazin at the same time....

The problem is once they get really wasted away the damage has be done as they destroy the organs causing bacterial infections.
