This may sound dumb but....

One of my fish was well passed being able to recover so i decided to stop his pain..

I used some clover oil as i have seen in previous posts this is one of the best ways?

After doing it i then wondered, have i used the correct stuff? it is the clover oil that numbs your mouth when you get tooth ache right?

I put the fish in to a small tub (round one that holds 2ltr) and put 2 drops of clover oil in..

Did i use it correct? and is it the right stuff i used?

Clover oil is what kills fish but there's so much debate over it that I think the best thing really is to use a large blunt instrument. i put them in a clear plastic bag and wack them with a baseball bat... it's grusome but you KNOW they're dead when their body is in half and you KNOW it was quick.

Lots of people say clover oil just paralyses the fish and they're actually suffering while you think they're dead :/

i use clove oil ...i put the fish in a cup with enough tank water to cover it then add 20 drops,

it dosnt take to long before the fish has gone.

sharon

im not one for putting a knife in there head or hitting them hard, so clove oil works for me

Hope i dont start to look like a fish and feel unwell around lolalouie

From the few times I have used clover oil. I feel it is the best way to euthanize a fish. When added to the water, the fish does not really react at first. It will soon start to lose its balance and its breathing will slow. Towards the end it it will stop trying to swim all together and it will breath very slowly, then its breathing will stop. It is recommended to leave them in the clove oil for a while after they have stopped breathing to make sure it is dead. This is important, because clove oil is often used as a sorta tranquilizer for fish. If they are not dead and you add them back to freshwater there is a chance they will recover. I normally say a 5 minuets of no gill movement = a dead fish. From what I have seen the fish do not seem to suffer that much and since clove oil is a pain killer I doubt the feel much of anything. In the end, it all comes down to your choice, would you rather die from DOing on pain meds or being hit by a car?

Ha ha, no but after growing up on a farm (one where every animal on it is a pet NOT food) I have come to learn that the way that hurts you most hurts them least. I'd rather see a fishes head fly off than slowly suffer to death. Also the reason for the clear bag is not for viewing pleasure its to make darn sure i don't miss... and it is pretty horrible seing your beloved pet in half but at least there's no worry about weather its suffering.. or might wake up!

I have a paranoia about being burried alive and all that. I had to kill my angelfish yesterday (in the above way) it's body was in half but i still woke my boyfriend up at 2 am and was like.. "a human can survive being cut in half, do you think maybe he didn't die?".. my boyfriend was not impressed.

I think I would rather hit a fish over the head to kill it than using clove oil. Like poster before me said, that way you know its done and it will have been done fast. Though clove oil is sure humane I would rather do this as its quicker for the fish, like 10 seconds out of its home max.

When I go fishing for Trout or Mackerel and the fish are big enough to eat I usually give them a tap on the head just behined the eyes, this kills the fish instantly.

i fill a small tub with water and put 2-3 drops in, usually the fish dies within 10-15 mins.
