Can you advise me on this one, guys? I have a Juwel Rekord 60, planted, fishlessly cycled, with 3 guppies and 3 platies in (all bought on Saturday). This morning the water was all cloudy, sort of white, milky cloudy. The water stats are ok (ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrate just over 40). I did a 25% water change and then treated the tank with Interpet Anti Fungus and Finrot on Tuesday and took the carbon filter part out- could that be causing it? Is it harmful? Should I do anything?

That a 12 gal tank, right can you say why you have added the med, plus you only removed the black carbon sponge, check the filter is running properly.

Filter seems to be running properly. Added med because my platy has finrot (see other thread)- that's why I took out carbon. I make it 13 gallons.

Do you over feed the tank is cycled isn't it.

The cloudyness is probably a bacterial bloom; lots of water changes should totally remove it over a week or 2 and medication is unesarsary.

I thougt she meant she did a fishless cycle then added the guppys.

Yes, I did a fishless cycle and then added guppies and platies. When you say, medication is unnecessary, TokisPhoenix, do you mean against the bacterial bloom? Surely I do need to treat my poor platy who has fungus and a big hole in her tail?

Sorry i missed that about your sick platty; definatly treat her.
All you need to get rid of the bacterial bloom is some very regular water changes and it shouls clear up in a week or 2, at least thats what worked best for me when i had one ages ago when i started out in fish keeping.

Maybe added to many fish to soon and it has caused a bacteria bloom, also over feeding can cause it, do you also have an airstone running.

Would you say 3 small guppies and 3 small platies to a 60 ltr tank was a lot? I hope I have not been overfeeding: twice a day, c/ 1-2 tropical flake/fish, and they've already skipped 2 meals. Perhaps I should cut down? I haven't got an airstone, should I get one?

Well I have a juwel rekord 60 it's nearly two years old now and the filter hardly rippled the surface so added another filter a fluval one and an airstone and that ripples the water alot now, once the bacteria bloom has gone, get some frozon foods in bloodworms, daphnia, and brimestrimp, and some peas now and then as to many dry foods can lead to swim bladder problems and dropsy.

Funny that, my Juwel Rekord 70 barely ripples the surface, but the Rekord 60 bubbles away like a boiling kettle.
Thanks for the advice about the dry food- I'll keep an eye on that and make sure they get a varied diet, particularly as one platy has already had a tummy problem (seems fine now). More fun for both them and me anyway. :D I have bloodworms in the freezer, and peas at the ready- just haven't got round to serving them yet.

Good luck, maybe the problem with my reckord 60 was that i never got a tube that fitted to the filter, so had to buy one still not great, that why i added another filter.
