Hi.

Having an odd problem with my discus tank.

Recently took all the plants out of my tank due to rainbow cichlids breeding in there before moving on, once i moved the cichlids on i removed all my plants as most had been destroyed, and placed them in my water bucket with some excess water and a pump to circulate the water while i was deciding what to do.

About 5 days later i got the plants back into the tank. Now its about a week since and im having an odd problem, the water in my tank is slightly cloudy and there is what looks like a skin on top of the water, no matter how much agitation/air bubbles i aim at the top of the water, it doesnt dissipate.

Stats:

Ammo 0
NitrI: 0
NitrA: 40
Ph: 6.2

Stock: 3 discus, 4 albino cories, 2 bn plecs.

I plan on doing a WC tonigt.

Oh also a quick addendum, i took the cover flaps off my tank to make a home made reflector from tin foil so while letting them dry i noticed the water was a little slimey, after it had dried the water has dried in a yellow substance that is gooey.. like bathroom sealent or something along that consistency

How many gallons is the tank?

Any signs of darting, turn upside down or gasping.
Just want to make sure the yellow stuff not toxic.

Are the plants rotting or dying.
Do you over feed.
Do you feed frozen foods.
Increase aeration.
Remove the slime with a kitchen paper towel. Just float the towel on the surface of the water.
The remove it.
Add some fresh filter floss.

190L tank, no signs of darting, and none of the discus are turning the usual black or being stressed. I feed once per day with about a 10 pence peice sized amount of EITHER tetra prima, hikari discus or 1 cube of bloodworm for the whole tank. This is usually sufficient to feed all the fish.

One of my plants is dieing, the others however seem to be doing OK, no discolouration or death.

There is SOME gasping.

I have recently been given a fluval u3 (brand new, not used) and am using that for aeration as it comes with a venturi.

Last night when i got home i had found that the slime had gone from the top of the water, the cover flaps havent been on for the last couple of days while i wait to do the diy reflector but im worried once i put the flaps back it may happen again.

I havent checked my external however i will do this tonight and see how the floss is doing however i have checked the fluval and it seemed to be OK.

Cant help, but appreciate the subtitle, defo made me giggle

Heh, good old DOD days... running around shouting #128###... so fun =-)

Remove the dying plant.
Water change.
If no improvement with gasping get back to the board.

Ask about the cover flaps over in tropical discussion.

Well everything is fine now.

Checked both filters and my external is pretty much clean and same with the internal. Checked the water and stats this morning, no movement regarding stats and the water is crystal clear now.

Also the one plant i was talking about only has a couple of dieing leaves, the others near the base are doing fine so i think its just those leaves had previous damage from my raindows spawning and destroying my plants.

Ill let you know if this changes in next few days!

That's good news then.
Have the fish stopped gasping?

Good news.
Good Luck.
