Yesterday I put a few pieces of slate into my tank and today the water has become cloudy.
The slate put in was real slate from the old roof tiles and I washed it thoroughly before putting it in.
I'm currently doing a fishless cycle on this tank and it's been set up for 2 days.
Any ideas what's caused the cloudiness?
Thanks!

Did you scrub the slate before adding to the aquarium?

Yes. Once with a scouring pad and again with a brush, just to be sure!

You say you scrubbed the slate before you put it in the tank so it's probably not the slate. It's probably just your tank cycling itself. Don't worry about it too much and just continue on with what your doing. Now if things don't clear up in a couple of days, then take the slate out, scrub it with some sea salt and hot water and try again. I'm not familiar with slate being used as roof tiles but were they adhered to the roof with an adhesive? If so, could some of the adhesive still be on the slate? Something to consider anyway.
Good luck :)

They were used as roof tiles a very long time ago, around 45 years, and once they were taken down they were slung into the garden, so they weren't fixed on using any adhesive.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep any eye on it :)

I think the slate has nothing to do with the cloudyness. You say you are fishless cycling & are at day two?

If so I would say its more than likely a bacterial bloom & totaly harlmless. It will clear in a day or two.

+1 to that

I agree with Tom, at some point it won't harm you to test your slate with a few drops of vinager to see if any unwanted metals are present. If it fizzes when the vinager is applied to the slates surface then its no good.

Keith.

Okay. I'll do that tomorrow :)
