I have a ten gallon tank with three goldfish, and two red eyed (tetras??). I set the tank up, went through the two week cycle, then yesterday over two hours I introduced the fish into the tank. Then today I noticed that the water was really cloudy. I haven't added any of those ahh what are they called, (they eat algea and suck the walls and stuff) anyway, the shop keeper told me to wait 5 days to let the bacteria process settle after I added the fish. I have an airstone, a wall heater set at 78, and a whisper filter that came with the tank.

Is the cloudy water dangerous to my fish, and how do I get rid of it?

For starters the tank is too small for the fish. Goldfish require a LOT of room for each fish, though most LFS don't bother to tell people that :/ . They are also VERY messy lol. Also, I'm guessing you did a fishless cycle, though two weeks isn't enough time for the tank to properly finish a cycle in my honest opinion. I'd suggest a 20% water change as your water parameters are likely out of whack from all those fish right now. I'd also suggest taking the fish back to the LFS and exchanging for something more suitable for a ten gallon tank.

I hope your LFS wasn't suggesting a plecostamus (pleco) for your tank, as they also are not suited to a ten gallon and most need a 40-50 gallon in the long run :X . There are many threads you can use as resources for suggestions on better fish to stock your tank, most are pinned topics :) I hope the water change helps and that you can trade fish soon, as I'd rather not see you lose any fish from the experience :/ .

Thank you, i'll call them first thing in the morning, they really weren't helpful at all, trying to get me to buy all of these chemicals and such, and told me that i could add the fish right away, no heating the water, no cycling the filter, idk, maybe they were right, but everything i've heard goes against that. Thank you again!

Could be the tanks is not really "fully" cycled yet. Sound slike yours cycled way too quick.

It also could be if you added any pH adjusters the cloudiness could have occured from that. But that will not harm your fish if that is the case, and the filter will take it away in a couple of days.

Hope this helps. Or that I am correct on this one -I hope...

Oh heaven, yes, I'd definately return the fish to them and find a different LFS to buy from as this one sounds like our local Walmart :/ They're more concerned with making money than making sure the fish are going to be in the right environment and that's not the way to run an LFS.

Definately finish cycling the tank before adding any fish to it if you want to do a fishless cycle. There is a pinned topic on that available near the top of this forum. If you choose to use a couple fish to cycle with, make sure they are a hardy type such as danios and don't put more than two in the tank, as they will provide enough ammonia to feed the beneficial bacteria as it develops. Also consider some java moss or an Amazon Sword plant as that will help not only with oxygenation, but also with keeping the nitrates down ;)
